Functional Rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation can look very different from person to person but the main aim is to restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy education and advice.  Gwynn’s approach with a mixture of physiotherapy, pilates and breathing mechanics help to maintain health for people of all ages, helping patients manage pain and prevent disease. This type of of rehabilitation is a science based profession and takes a ‘whole person’ approach to health and wellbeing which includes the patient’s general lifestyle.

At the core is the patient’s involvement in their own care, through education, awareness empowerment and participation in their treatment.

Gwynn is a Chartered musculoskeletal physiotherapist with over 25 years of clinical experience, specialising in dysfunctional breathing for the last 20 years. He practiced at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust for 12 years before rejoining the RAF in 2010, where he managed multiple military physiotherapy facilities and collaborated with various sports teams, focusing on the impact of dysfunctional breathing on athletic performance.

Later, as head of the Specialist Rehabilitation team at Stanford Hall, he integrated treatments for dysfunctional breathing into programs for service members recovering from complex conditions, including COVID-19.

After retiring from the RAF in February 2022, he started the “Breathing Mechanic,” aimed at using breathing education on enhancing physical performance and recovery. Additionally, he is a committee member of the ‘Physiotherapy for Breathing Pattern Dysfunction’ group and the “Breathe to Perform” initiative, promoting effective breathing strategies in sports and performance training.

Discovery Appointments (30 minutes)

An opportunity to drop in to see Gwynn for a 30 minute consultation for anything from an ongoing muscular niggle, a Pilates/postural assessment with takeaway exercises to a functional breathing assessment with advice on breathing efficiency.  These are designed as an introduction to the clinic to meet Gwynn with recommendations for self-help and feedback on potential future treatment if you should wish to take this up.
